The Will To Do

When I read self-help books, I get energized and inspired. I want to do more and be more. I want to change my life. But more often than not, the determination I feel fizzles out before I can make lasting changes in my life.
If you read books like that (or a lot of motivational quotes), it's almost always about how you have to work hard and be disciplined. You need to do more than everyone else to get results better than everyone else.
But after the first few books, all I can think about is how it's easier said than done. God in His infinite wisdom created a world designed to operate on laws and principles. And in this century, it really shouldn't be that hard. All the philosophers of old have already discovered all the laws and all the successful people have already implemented them and written books about it so we know exactly what to do to become like them.

The limitations
One word - endless. It differs for all, and it's more for some than for others but everyone has. Whether it be lack of funds and resources (the financial barrier, the most common) the scars that hold us back (the emotional barrier) or - my personal favorite - the fear of failure and judgement (the mental barrier), we all have reasons we can't become who we want to be or who we're meant to be. Brain Tracy would call all these excuses

So, solutions?
I'm not here with an inspirational quote of my own. Whatever I could possibly say has already been said in many ways by others before me. What I know (from experience), is that willpower and determination don't do it. They aren't enough.
I'm stuck in an exhausting cycle of knowing exactly what I need to do to get to where I need to be yet somehow not being able to get there. Maybe I get discouraged too easily. Maybe I care too much about what others think. Maybe I just need to be patient and consistent (since results don't come overnight).
Maybe it's everything.
But I know that there's not special group of people that are destined to be great. And I know I want to be great. Mediocrity won't do it for me.

What motivates you?

  1. I think the most important thought here is that greatness is not for a special group of people. This encourages us to keep moving relentlessly in the direction of greatness. Good read as always. Keep it up 👍🏾
